Tori was from an accidental breeding, she was never meant to be here. June Sutherlin was very upset about the breeding, we cowned Tori’s Dam who lived with June, I assured her the breeding would be ok, even if it was a line breeding and closer than I would like. When Tori and her two brothers arrived I knew she was perfect, you couldn’t get better markings and she was gorgeous! Tori came to live with me and was going to be our new show puppy. I never had a puppy as perfect as Tori, she crate trained herself and just automatically seemed to know how to behave!

When Tori was around 4 months old she had an allergic reaction to something, she broke out in hives, benadryl didn’t work. I took her to my vet, where she was given a shot of dexamethasone. Since it was a Friday my vet gave me a shot to give Sat if she got worse. The shot worked but then Sat she broke out again, we gave her the other shot. Sunday morning we didn’t have hives, but poor Tori was throwing up and had bloody diarrhea. Off to the emergency vet we go! They give her 4 shots, an antibiotic, dex, benadryl , something for nausea and then they gave her sub q fluids. That seemed to do the trick and Tori was fine, Mon, Tues and Wed, but then she would lay down and not get up, I would take her out to bathroom and she would use the bathroom but then lay right back down. Off to the vet I go with Tori and one of the vet techs noticed a small lump on left side but that’s all we could find wrong with her. Another antibiotic shot and pills for home, but there wasn’t any change the next day and her lump was bigger, so off to LSU Vet School.

LSU kept her over the weekend in quarantine area and tested her 3 times for Parvo because of previous vomiting and diarrhea, all test were negative. By Monday her skin was starting to rot and fall off around shoulder area, veterinarian dermatologist was consulted, more testing and finally a diagnosis. Vasculitis probably caused by fluids given sub q that were contaminated by strep. Everywhere sub q fluids touched inside her body, skin fat and muscle rotted and melted off. LSU called me when her bill reached over $5000 and told me her final bill would run well over $25,000.

There was no way I could pay that much for her vet bills and then there could be other complications. After talking to June we talked about the fact we might have to let her go, I called LSU and let them know what I was thinking of doing, they suggested I turn her over to them, but they wouldn’t sign papers that she would be spayed and not used for experiments, so there was no way I would agree to that. After many tears, June and I decided to meet at LSU, see Tori and make decision on exactly what to do. June is a non-practicing vet and took it upon her self to contact Tori’s dermatologist and talk before I got there, they had decided that June was capable of taking care of Tori at home and bringing her back for surgeries if agreeable to me. When they brought Tori into see me, she was a 4 month old puppy, that hadn’t had her cropped ears taped in a week, was wrapped in bandages from neck to tail and she was bouncing off the walls because we were there to see her. How could I not send her home with June? After many bandages (changed every day), debridings, and surgeries to pull skin together Tori was finally able to come home. I can never thank June enough for helping save Tori’s life and sending her back home to us! Tori would never be a Champion like the other dogs here, but in our eyes she was one of the biggest winners we owned!

You can not find a better Boxer than Tori, she is a great counter surfer, watchdog, baby sitter and puppy watcher, she is worth every penny and minute that was spent on her!
